How leak detection works

A thermal imaging camera can help identify the location of hidden pipes in floors and walls. Warm water inside heating pipes heats the surrounding materials, creating visible temperature differences on the surface that can be detected with a thermal camera.

Cold water pipes are more difficult to locate, but in some cases they can still be detected if there is a temperature difference between the pipe and the surrounding structure.

In certain situations, the water supply can be temporarily adjusted so that warm water is circulated through otherwise cold water pipes. This can help make pipe routes more visible using thermal imaging.

In the event of a leak, escaping hot water can spread into surrounding materials, creating a warm area or “thermal anomaly” that can be identified with a thermal camera.

When used together with a moisture meter, these tools allow most leaks to be detected without damaging floors or walls. A moisture meter helps measure damp levels in floors and walls, which can indicate the presence of a hidden leak or water ingress.
